About

Jan Malmgren is based in Lidköping, in south-central Sweden. He has a PhD in Ecology from Örebro University, and is a published scientific author and an award-winning assistant professor / lecturer.

What began as a hobby in his early teens, photography served as a tool in his work. He also worked as a semi-professional photographer between 2003 to 2018, running his own city studio, where he focused on weddings and commercial portraits.

Today, Jan calls himself “a happy hobbyist” with no client deadlines and demands. This lets him dig deeper into his creative passions, like photographing nature and landscapes, architecture and interiors, art in public spaces, food, gardens and people. “This is the kind of photography that inspires me the most, and it is also both recreational and therapeutic”. In 2025, Jan started a YouTube channel - PHOTOGRAPHY by Jan Malmgren - in which he makes videos about his passion for all things photography related, centered around digital medium format photography. The channel has gained a following, and Jan is very humble about being able to reach so many - all over the world.

Jan is also a musician, song-writer and fiction writer. All these creative interests has a place in his heart and mind, as well as on this website. “If you are a creative spirit, life is too short to just sit around and wait for things to happen. We live in a time where the possibilities of being a photographer, musician, writer etc, are endless. I am a curious person, and I will try whatever tool or technique that interests me. I am no stranger to using AI - but not as a replacement for the creative work (which is the fun part), but for assistance with doing the boring stuff. There is a crucial difference there. Being curious and creative is the most fundamental human property of all.

When Jan is working on personal projects, in whatever genre, he strives for visual storytelling. “It gives me an opportunity to delve deeper into my love for nature, art and the ecology of humanity - as well as the abstracts of capturing light and shadow. With every creative project I attempt, I add another piece to my collection of stories - and there are so many stories to tell! For me, a truly exceptional piece of art is one that can convey an emotional response with the viewer, who was not present at the time and place of the creative process.”
